Futura emerged from the ideals of the New Frankfurt Project, a radical social housing initiative in 1920s Germany that sought to bring modernist design to everyday life. Conceived by Paul Renner in 1927, it was more than a typeface — it was a manifesto for modernity. Renner, who was deeply influenced by the Bauhaus movement and the broader European avant-garde, sought to design a typeface that expressed the clarity, rationality, and optimism of a new machine age. Each letterform was constructed on geometric principles — circles, triangles, and squares — reflecting the belief that design could be both functional and universal. At a time when ornate scripts and humanist serifs dominated printed media, Futura stood in deliberate opposition. It was described as “the typeface of our time” and “a face representing the new typography of the European avant-garde”. Its sharp geometry, uniform weight, and absence of decorative flourish embodied the modernist pursuit of order and precision. More than just a visual style, Futura symbolised progress — a typographic response to industrialisation, architecture, and social reform. It became a language for the future, one that would shape global design for generations to come.

Halcom
Information

Halcom is an award-winning sans serif typeface inspired by the historic geometric’s of the 1920s, specifically Futura. The design is not a simple pastiche of what went before; this is much more than that. It is a close investigation of how Futura inspired other type designs like Avenir and helped push the boundary of what is a modern typeface of its generation.

Overlaying perfect geometric shapes, careful adjustment is made for each character and each corner to the point of balance between pure mathematics and optical correctness. The result is a distinctively modern geometric font family that is strikingly simple in design yet perfectly pleasing to the reader's eye.

Details include 550 characters per style with alternate lowercase a, g and y, five variations of numerals, manually edited kerning and OpenType features. In 2015, Halcom earned a Silver Award in the Hiii Brand International Typography Competition.
